Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh (peace be upon you) and greetings. Alhamdulillah, praise be to Allah SWT (Subhanahu Wa-Ta’ala), for the greatness and mercy, we can welcome the new March 2016 issue of the “SUSURGALUR: Jurnal Kajian Sejarah & Pendidikan Sejarah” (Journal of History Education & Historical Studies). Although the publication was late, but the contents of the journal are still relevance and very important for building the awareness of identity and nationality for Bruneian and Indonesian societies in particular and citizen of Southeast Asian countries in general.

Articles published in the SUSURGALUR journal have studied that relate to historical and/or educational history and written by various scholars not only from Southeast Asian countries, but also around the globe. This study of history and education history is, in point of fact, included as one of the areas of studies conducted by the APB (Akademi Pengajian Brunei or Academy of Brunei Studies), particularly in the disciplines that relate to Brunei Darussalam.

As an overview, the Academy of Brunei Studies UBD (University of Brunei Darussalam) was established in 1990, as a multidisciplinary centre of study and research covering all aspects of life in Brunei Darussalam. Undergraduate programmes in Academy Brunei Studies UBD were first offered in 1996, and Graduate degrees followed in 2004. Today, the Academy Brunei Studies UBD offers Bachelor of Arts in Brunei Studies, M.A. (Master of Arts) by research, and Ph.D. (Philosophy Doctor) degrees.

Although one of the smallest of UBD’s faculties, the Academy Brunei Studies is also one of the most vibrant and dynamic, providing a lively, informed academic environment, in which graduate and undergraduate students are able to thrive. All staffs are experts in their subject areas and adopt a cross-disciplinary approach to teaching and research. They also place great emphasis on making the Academy Brunei Studies as a stimulating and friendly place to study.

Today, the Academy Brunei Studies has a growing community of local and international graduate students studying for M.A. by research and Ph.D. degrees on a diverse range of topics that include comparative and multi-country studies. In addition, undergraduates have a wide-range of modules to choose from that reflects the Academy Brunei Studies’s multi-disciplinary nature and its approach to the study of Brunei. The Academy of Brunei Studies will carry on to built-up opportunities for publication to not only lecturers nevertheless to student researchers in and outside Brunei. This is in line with the vision of this Academy Brunei Studies, namely “An academic center of excellence that leads the world in the creation and dissemination of knowledge relating to all aspects of life in Brunei Darussalam”; and its mission “To achieve a global reputation as an academic center of excellence in Brunei Studies”.

As shown in an article written by one of the faculty members of APB UBD, who has issued on the history of fishing activities. What is essence here that his article is related to fisheries study that is still rarely and uncaring researched by Bruneian scholars. As we know that “history” is not merely on political matters, but including and covering all aspects in the human mankind life. Fisheries study, as proposed by the author, related to fishing activity and it has experienced such a long of development history. These developments are influenced by efforts to meet the demands and needs of fisheries resources. And Brunei Darussalam, as one of the island monarchy state in Malay archipelagos, still needs to be researched and studied on fisheries and other aspects in maritime history.

Another articles have been written by the scholars from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and India. It is related to diverse themes, such as Teaching and Learning on the History Education, History of Maritime, Indiginous Peoples; and Social Corporate Responsibity. As stated by a scholar of Indonesia that reenactment of heroism values through learning history by using histrionics methods is very important in order the History subject has had useful in the school. The scholars of Malaysia concerned on cannon of Sultan Setebuk as a symbol of greatness in the maritime history of the Iranuns people in Tempasuk, Sabah. While the scholars of the Philippines studied on beliefs and practices in the life cycle of the Agtas of Lupigue, Ilagan, Isabela, Philippines and its implications to social development. And, last but not least, a scholar of India overviewed about the international and national perspectives on the corporate social responsibility as a Harbinger of quality change.
